Customer acquisition

Turn interest into
an informed next step.

An acquisition framework for community solar, with the consumer journey and provider responsibilities made explicit.

Partnership principles

Every campaign needs an approved project offer, a defined audience and clear responsibilities. The framework below is a discussion guide, not a promise of enrollment volume or a claim of integration with a provider.

01

Attract with accurate information

Explain the off-site model, utility continuity and the difference between credits and net savings. Avoid unverified savings, coverage, affiliation and urgency claims.

Output: an informed visitor, not an enrollment.
02

Check territory and account fit

Use an approved project inventory, current capacity and utility/account rules. A ZIP can begin the process; it cannot certify eligibility on its own.

Output: a documented fit review or a clear unavailable state.
03

Present the specific terms

Show price/discount basis, all fees, billing method, contract duration, cancellation notice, expected activation and the actual provider.

Output: an offer the customer can review and retain.
04

Obtain the right permission

Separate contact follow-up, optional marketing, utility-data authorization and the subscription agreement. Request only the data required for that stage.

Output: a purpose-specific consent record.
05

Make an accountable handoff

Use a verified receiving system, deduplication and explicit accepted/rejected states. Tell the customer what happens next and which organization is responsible.

Output: a confirmed handoff, with enrollment status kept separate.
Quality measures to agree

Measure the right
points in the journey.

Agree on reporting categories for the specific relationship. Measure each stage separately rather than treating every inquiry as an enrolled customer.

Qualification quality

Track valid utility matches, eligible account categories, unsupported locations and capacity-related outcomes.

Consent & disclosure completion

Track whether required versions and permissions were recorded before any authorized data handoff.

Handoff outcomes

Distinguish inquiries, accepted referrals, completed provider enrollment and activation. Do not collapse them into one “customer” count.

Customer understanding

Review recurring billing, cancellation and activation questions so educational content can be improved responsibly.

Before a campaign launches

Make the rules
easy to follow.

Agree on the approved offer, audience, channels, recipient systems and escalation process before inviting customers to act.

  • Document project/utility eligibility and how inventory is refreshed.
  • Approve every substantive claim and required disclosure.
  • Confirm permitted outreach and marketing consent requirements.
  • Test success, duplicate, unavailable, rejected and interrupted states.
  • Assign consumer support and privacy-request responsibilities.
